REMARRIAGES

Do you know…

that remarriages are rising steadily in Singapore? In 1990, there were 1,700 divorced men and 1,400 divorced women who remarried. A decade later in 2000, these figures have increased by 58 per cent and 67 per cent respectively to 2,700 and 2,400. Every  year, more divorced men than divorced women remarry. Over the decade, 24,600 divorced men have remarried, as compared with 22,300 divorced women.

Although the absolute number of remarriages has increased, the remarriage rates (out  of those who are divorced) have declined. In 1990, the remarriage rates were 22  per cent for males and 11 per cent for females. In 2000, these rates had fallen to 13 per cent and 7 per cent respectively. This is because the increase in remarriages is not as fast as the increase in the number of divorces. The number of divorces rose by 42 per cent from 3,600 in 1990 to 5,200 in 2000.
