Summary Findings
In 2006, the wholesale trade industry comprised some 35,400 establishments and employed a total of 234,400 workers. Operating receipts amounted to $1,027.4 billion, representing an increase of 19.5% over 2005. Operating surplus also rose by 22.6% to $22.4 billion. The wholesale trade industry generated the total value added of $35.3 billion in 2006, 18.0% higher than the previous year. [more]

In 2006, the Information and Communications services industry comprised 5,900 establishments and employed 62,000 workers. Operating receipts grew by 8.9% to $26.0 billion and operating surplus expanded by 3.9% to $4.1 billion. Total value added grew by 6.9% from $7.9 billion in 2005 to $8.5 billion in 2006. [more]

In 2006, the retail trade industry comprised some 20,000 establishments, employing a total of 107,000 workers. Operating receipts amounted to $37.3 billion, 3.6% higher than the previous year. In 2006, the transport & storage services industry comprised 9,100 establishments and employed 117,900 workers. The industry collected $61.2 billion in operating receipts, 4.9% higher compared with 2005. Operating surplus dropped 4.6% to $12.0 billion in 2006. Summary Findings
The food & beverage services industry comprised about 5,000 establishments in 2006 and employed a total of 75,300 workers. The industry generated total operating receipts of $4,653 million in 2006, which was 7.4% higher than 2005. Operating surplus stood at $327 million in 2006. Value added of the food & beverage services industry rose from $1,440 million in 2005 to $1,605 million in 2006. [more]

Summary Findings
In 2006, the health services industry comprised some 3,600 establishments and employed a total of 54,000 workers. Total operating receipts generated by the industry increased by 8.9% from $5.8 billion in 2005 to $6.3 billion in 2006. Operating surplus stood at $918 million, 5.1% higher compared with 2005. Value added of the health services industry grew by 7.8% to reach $3,624 million in 2006. [more]
 
 
Economic Surveys Series 2006 - The Services Sector
 
Summary Findings

In 2006, the services sector comprised 138,000 establishments, employing a total of 1,128,000 workers. The sector collected $1,294.2 billion in operating receipts, an increase of 17.7% over 2005. Correspondingly, total operating expenditure incurred also increased by 17.3% to $1,217.3 billion. Operating surplus increased by 18.6% to reach $96.3 billion in 2006. Total value added grew from $101.9 billion in 2005 to $113.8 billion in 2006, an increase of 11.6%.

The results were based on the Annual Survey of Services 2006 which covered all establishments and statutory boards engaged in services activities but excluded government ministries and departments, foreign missions, taxi drivers, independent artistes and other individual self-employed persons. Financial institutions such as banks and finance, securities and insurance companies were also not covered. [more]
