Research and Statistics Units (RSUs) in other ministries and statutory boards collect, compile and disseminate statistics on specific sectors or subject matters that are relevant to their respective parent organisation’s purview. The RSU could be a full-fledged statistical department or a smaller statistical unit or section, depending on the level and complexity of statistical needs to be met.
The main RSUs gazetted under the Statistics Act are in the Ministry of Manpower, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Economic Development Board, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Building and Construction Authority and Info-communications Development Authority of Singapore. Their respective areas of specialisation are labour and employment, health, education, environment, manufacturing, finance, construction activities and information and communications technology. The list of the gazetted RSUs in ministries and statutory boards is given in the Second Schedule of the Statistics Act.
Some ministries and statutory boards have informal RSUs which collect statistics either as by-products of administrative systems or under the appropriate legislation governing the operations of their respective organisations. The RSU is usually set up within a division or department to meet the needs of administration and facilitate the main operations of the ministry, statutory board, division or department.
Several other government agencies also collect and compile statistics but do not have a separate statistics unit. For these government agencies, their research, strategic or planning divisions/branches/sections often collect or compile statistics on specific subject matters to meet the requirements of the agencies.
