The Singapore Department of Statistics is responsible for developing national statistical standards and promoting the adoption of these standards. Since 1958, classifications of economic activities have been standardised and published as the Singapore Standard Industrial Classification. The SSIC is used for statistical surveys and censuses of population, households and establishments and, increasingly, in administrative databases. The adoption and use of a common standard in the collection, analysis and dissemination of statistics ensures consistency and comparability of data, facilitating relevant and meaningful analysis as well as data sharing.
The SSIC 2010 adopts the basic framework and principles of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities, Fourth Revision (ISIC Rev.4). It is reviewed and updated regularly to reflect significant changes in the structure of the Singapore economy and the emergence of new activities as well as to align with changes in the international standard.
This tenth edition of the SSIC supersedes its previous editions. More details on the classification at the four- and five-digit levels are available in the publication, Singapore Standard Industrial Classification 2010. It describes the principles, scope and structure of the classification. To facilitate better understanding and appropriate use of the classification, detailed write-up is provided at the class (four-digit) level. A comparison table of SSIC 2005 and SSIC 2010 up to class level is also included.
