Singapore ratified the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on 17 November 1994. Singapore ratified the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction on 24 September 2024.

Singapore has participated in the annual Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (SPLOS) since 1994.
Singapore’s Ambassador for International Law Rena Lee presided over negotiations that led to adoption by consensus of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement in June 2023, which entered into force in January 2026.
Singapore has participated in the two BBNJ Preparatory Commission sessions that have been held thus far.
