Definitions

Data on forest area is defined as any area (i) with vegetation dominated by trees having the potential to grow to at least 5m in height; (ii) with the potential for a canopy cover of at least 30%; and (iii) of at least 0.5 ha, with a minimum width of 20m.

Concepts

This is in line with the definition of our land-use category "Forest Land" for the purpose of reporting of greenhouse gas emissions/removals for the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector. For Singapore, this will include, among others, our nature reserves, nature parks and mangrove forests.

Computational Method

(Forest area in ha) / (Total land area in ha) x 100%,
where total land area is fixed at land area of Singapore as reported in Food and Agriculture Organisation Statistics Division (FAOSTAT).

Data Collection

Land cover and land use map generated using high-resolution imagery from SPOT and Pleiades satellites. Data are reported to the FAO for the Global Forest Resource Assessment 2020 report.
