Definitions

The Gender Parity Index (GPI) of the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for each level of education is defined as the ratio of female to male values among resident population (i.e., Singapore citizens and permanent residents) enrolled in public and private education institutions. GER at a specified level of education is the number of students (regardless of age) enrolled in the specified level of education, expressed as a percentage of the official school age group population corresponding to the same level of education.

Concepts

To measure the general level of disparity between the two gender sub-populations of interest with regard to their enrolment.

Computational Method

[A] Gender Parity Index: (Female enrolment ratio for a specified level of education) / (Male enrolment ratio for the corresponding level of education)
[B] Gross Enrolment Ratio: (Number of students enrolled in a specified level of education, regardless of age) / (Population of official school age group for the corresponding level of education) x 100%

Disaggregation is available by education level (primary, secondary and tertiary)

Data Collection

Enrolment data are compiled through administrative data for government schools and institutions, and survey data for private schools collected through other agencies.
Population data are collected through Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS).
